Meet Tom Longboat

Scholastic Canada

Elizabeth MacLeod

I’m so happy that kids across Ontario will be reading about Tom Longboat and finding out about his incredible story. I loved writing about him because I really enjoy sharing the stories of amazing Canadian with readers. When Tom was about your age, the Canadian government forced him to attend Residential School. Indigenous kids like Tom were taken from their homes and had to be residents at these schools — that’s how they got their name. There were Residential Schools across the country. At these schools, Indigenous kids had to give up their families and friends back home. They weren’t allowed to speak their Indigenous languages that they’d spoken all their lives. Some kids were abused and beaten. No wonder Tom ran away. Tom grew up to become one of the fastest marathon runners on the planet. He was world famous! Despite being treated so badly by the government when he was a kid, as an adult Tom gave up all the fame and money from his running career to become a soldier in World War I and help Canada win the war. I think it’s amazing that Tom did that. He had a very dangerous job running messages between soldiers and their leaders. He was such a fast runner that he was really good at this work. Tom kept running, even when times got tough for him. I hope you’ll find Tom life inspiring and that it will help you keep going.
