Marie-Louise Gay

Born in Québec City, Marie-Louise Gay studied graphic design at L’institut des arts graphiques in Montréal and animation at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School. Later on, she studied illustration at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. She started her career as an editorial illustrator. She was also artistic director and in charge of production for La Courte Echelle, a children’s book publisher. Over the last thirty years, Marie-Louise Gay has written and/or illustrated over sixty books : board books, picture books, chapter books, from the Stella and Sam series, Caramba, Any Questions, Short Stories for Little Monsters, Mustafa and Fern and Horn Her books have been published over fifteen languages. Marie-Louise Gay is also the author of three puppet plays for children: Bonne Fête Willy, Qui a peur de Loulou? and Le Jardin de Babel. She has created the sets, puppets and costumes of her plays. She has been the creative consultant on the animated TV series the Stella and Sam Show based on her book series Stella and Sam. Marie-Louise taught illustration at the Université du Québec à Montréal for a number of years. She has won awards for her work, such as: two Canada Council Awards,1984, two Governor General’s Award (1987-2000), Mr. Christie’s Book Award (1997), the Ruth Schwartz Award (2000-2006),the Vicky Metcalfe Body of Work Award (2006), the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award (2006),The E.B.White Award (2007) and has been nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award as well as the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Marie-Louise Gay lives in Montréal.
