Helaine Becker

Helaine Becker is the bestselling author of more than 90 books for children and young adults, including the #1 Canadian national bestseller and “enduring Canadian Christmas classic” A Porcupine in a Pine Tree (Scholastic Canada) and the international bestseller Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13 (Henry Holt). She’s a multi-time winner of the Silver Birch Award and a two-time winner of the Lane Anderson Award for science writing for children. She has had three nonfiction titles recognized by the Junior Library Guild. Her books have been recipients of The Cook Prize, the Giverny Prize, Bank Street Best of the Year, Red Cedar Award, Eureka Award and a Sydney Taylor Notable Book. They have been translated into eleven languages and are sold in dozens of countries around the world. Helaine has toured four times for Canadian Children’s Book Week and has been a featured speaker at the World Science Festival, Vancouver Writers Fest, Tucson Festival of Books, the Frye Festival, ALOUD, Weaving Words and many more. She speaks to thousands of kids annually at schools and libraries all over the world, inspiring children to discover for themselves the super power of literacy. A New York native, Helaine has lived happily in Toronto for more than 20 years. She shares her home with her husband and a Hungarian sheepdog named Ella. (Her two grown sons, wisely, live elsewhere) She is also a certified pyrotechnician, so — KABOOM! — expect fireworks at any time.

Born in Québec City, Orbie has lived in Cap d’Espoir, Gaspésie, since 2005. A self-learner, she has worked as an illustrator for over 10 years. In 2014, she illustrated her first children’s book, “The Little Pig, the Bicycle, and the Moon” (Simon & Shuster), which won the Quebec Booksellers Award, 0-5 Years, and has been translated in multiple countries across the globe. She has also worked on “Sloth at the Zoom” (Owl Kids Books), and many other books in French, her mother tongue. Her first book as author and illustrator,  “The Clothesline“, was published in October 2019. Since becoming a mom, Orbie has created multiple illustrated tools on motherhood which have become very popular, like the well-known “Baby Sign Language” poster. Her own children are endless wells of inspiration for the webcomic she publishes on her blog. For several years now, she has produced a cartoon published monthly in the Graffici newspaper.
She regularly visits various schools to offer workshops, sharing her passion of illustrating books and comics with students. It’s a part of her job that she loves and which greatly inspires her.
