MASIANA KELLY
Traditional and contemporary Dene and Inuk artist, author, and educator Masiana Kelly is from Fort Simpson (Liidlii Kue), NWT and Kugluktuk (Coppermine), NU. When growing up, she was surrounded by traditional beading and sewing handmade by her granny and other elders & knowledge keepers, who would also share stories with her. As an adult, Masiana continues to learn from elders and knowledge keepers. She always says she is just like a raven (translates to ‘Tulugaq’ in Inuinnaqtun), she likes sparkly things – when she creates her jewelry, they always have a little bit of sparkle.
Masiana became the artist and author she is thanks to learning from her granny and other knowledge keepers that she grew up around. Besides all the talented elders and knowledge keepers, much of her inspiration comes from the land that we live on; the patterns of leaves, flowers, trees, and everything else in nature that saturate my environment is all inspiration needed.
As an avid reader, Masiana was always in the middle reading a book or two and dreamt of one day writing her own book. Her first book, A Summer Day in the Community (2020) follows two boys as they bike around their small northern town, depicting landmarks around Kugluktuk, NU. The Dancing Trees (2021), is inspired by teachings and stories her granny shared with her when growing up and was shortlisted for a First Nation Communities READ Award in 2022. We Love You as Much as the Fox Loves Its Tail (2023) was inspired by special moments with her children and activities she would do with her students when she taught kindergarten. Her latest book, Bannock in a Hammock (2024), won the Picture Book Award at Northwords NWT in 2025.
Masiana’s artwork represents who she is and where she came from, “I wouldn’t be who I am without the people in my life. As a Dene and Inuk women from the Northwest Territories/Nunavut, I hope that my artwork and stories show everyone how proud I am of my ancestry, my family, and how deeply I love this land.”
